HOW TO OVERCOME THE FEAR OF CHANGE AND BE MORE RESILIENT

Adapting to change can be difficult and resisting change normally comes down to one thing: fear. But, if we keep a positive attitude and develop resilience, we can find new ways to overcome difficulties.

Click here to read the article Why building resilience is a top skill for the workplace - by Shonna Waters, PhD. Learn more about how building resilience can play an important role in employee wellbeing and shapes the way employees respond to and manage the stress of change.

In addition, here are some practical tips to build resilience.

Steps To Become More Resilient

  • Stop negative thought cycles: Create a an action plan for what to do during negative thought cycles, such as  exercising or deep breathing to force the brain and body to focus on something else.

  • Question the catastrophe: Remind yourself that the best possible outcome is just as likely to occur as the worst possible outcome.

  • Overcome your fear of failure: Build a “challenge mindset” i.e., the mindset that doing something hard or something you could fail at, is a challenge. Reflect on past challenges that you’ve overcome.

  • Emotionally distance yourself from challenges: Think about your experiences as if you were someone else witnessing your experiences from afar. Emotional distancing also makes it less likely that you will replay the unpleasant details of the event, and as a result, you may feel better when bad things happen.

  • Remember, this will pass: The next time you are in the midst of a stressful situation, think about a future where you will no longer feel bad about whatever you’re struggling with.

  • Find the silver linings: Find the positives in stressful or difficult situations,) including opportunities that could result from these situations.

  • Find the benefits in life: With some practice, you can find the benefits to just about any situation. Train your brain to focus on the positive.
