NAKHEEL PARTNERS WITH DUBAI REEF PROJECT, ONE OF THE WORLD'S LARGEST MARINE REEF DEVELOPMENTS
Nakheel is partnering with and supporting the Dubai Reef project, one of the world’s largest marine reef developments. This project was launched under the directive of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai.
The Dubai Reef project is a long term pioneering step in the journey towards ecological preservation and is part of the citywide sustainability movement ‘Dubai Can,’ set to unfold in four phases, starting 2024. The ‘Dubai Can’ project, since inception has successfully reduced the use of single use plastic water bottles by over 15.5 million 500 ml bottles since launch.
The project is led by Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) and founding partner, the Regulatory Committee on Fishing of Living Aquatic Resources in Dubai, in cooperation with Dubai Chambers, the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), and Nakheel.
With over 400,000 cubic metres of reefs spanning 600 square kilometres of Dubai’s waters, the project will aim to increase fish stocks, support sustainable fishing and contribute to boosting food security. The Dubai Reef project will also play a vital role in reducing carbon emissions and revival of marine biodiversity.
The project aligns with the sustainability goals and strategies of Dubai and is an important step for Nakheel to contribute and reinforce its commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation. The project will be worked on by a multidisciplinary team from Nakheel across Projects, Marine Engineering and Marketing, alongside DET and other partners.
